20 June 2009 will see the biggest ever re-enactment event held in SA with the annual Battle of Barbarossa shoot.

The event will be a shooting competition for WW2 era rifles and hand guns as well as a re-enactment of the Nazi German invasion of Russia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Barbarossa

The event will be attended by re-enactors from across SA incuding the professional Heritage Group from Cape Town, Free State SAAACA and my very own "Propagandakompanie". The School of Armour Museum will be displaying original WW2 hardware and militaria stalls will be selling anything from German cammo to Russian boots.

Ever seen an original WW2 T34 tank running over broken ground? On 20 June you can at Leeuwberg, 10km south of Bloemfontein!

Scenes from last year's re-enactment:

Looks like a lot of fun.

Why do these things always happen when I have booked a hunt?

Mmmmm.... a bit of a bugger to attend this year... But we can always try to be there for the next one!!! (Wouldn't want Mic to have to catch the baby in his car... the noisy, bumpy Honda might just trigger early labour Nope )
And besides, the "kappie" I can live with, but add a bump to the mix and things just start to go wrong...

Here are some pics from SA's largest ever re-enactment event.

OPERATION BARBAROSSA of 22 June 1941, Germany's invasion of Russia was re-enacted on 20 June 2009 at Leeuwberg (Bloemfontein), the farm of Adv. Collin Steyn.

The German "forces" consisted of:

42 x Troops
1 x Armoured car
1 x Armoured troop carrier ( 12 Man )
2 x Kuebelwagens
1 x BMW R71 "Krad" with side car and MG 34
1 x KDF TYP 82E "Propagandawagen" staff car
1 x single engined aircraft (Chipmonk trainer) that did low flying flybys

The Ruskies consisted of:

16 x Troops
2 x Bunkers and several trenches
1 x T34 tank
1 x Willys Jeep

2000 visitors looked on as the Germans drove the Russians from one trench after the other, but then they stopped short on the "banks of the Volga".

The proceeds from 800 cars were donated to the School of Armour Museum.

Our Kriegsberichterzug exhibition consisted of our Type 82E KDF replica, a military bell tent, war reporter's field office, etc. etc:

German troops deploy from their armoured troop carrier:

A SS officer urges his troops forward:

A "krad" scout cautiously approaches a knocked out T34:

A war reporter poses for a pic with his Frau and a female party official:

See posting elsewhere of how we built the KDF 82E replica.

Snappie, I think your display is great - and that car of yours does not have to stand back for any of the others - if I am not mistaken that armoured car looks supiciously much like a British Saracen?

Correct. The current owner, a friend of mine, has a scrap yard and a security company sold the vehicle for scrap to him because they could not get it to run. My friend only repaired the starter and now he has a 100% original Saracen, complete with working radios and turret!

Looks like you guys had a lot of fun Snappie Wink Just don't ever wear that if you visit us here in the U.S. Most of the guys in my VFW unit would consider you target practice Clap
